Definition: Motor vehicle repair and maintenance shop, heavy or light (General Definition)
A “heavy motor vehicle repair and maintenance shop” is an establishment that provides repair and maintenance services for automotive vehicles that is required to register with the Department of Motor Vehicles as a “motor vehicle repair shop” pursuant to the New York State Motor Vehicle Repair Shop Registration Act. All other establishments that provide repair and maintenance services for automotive vehicles, including those that consist solely of changing oil, water, batteries or tires, replacing fan belts, air filters or oil filters, installing windshield wiper blades or light bulbs, polishing and washing, repairing, installing or replacing seat safety belts, upholstery, or communications equipment, shall be “light motor vehicle repair and maintenance shops.” However, these definitions shall not apply to automotive service stations .
