Community Boards review every land-use application (zoning changes, special permits, variances, dispositions of city land) within their boundaries. The board issues a non-binding recommendation that goes to the Borough President, the City Planning Commission, and ultimately the City Council.
Each NYC Community Board has up to 50 volunteer members serving staggered two-year terms. The Borough President appoints all members, with half nominated by the local Council Member representing the community district.
For Fiscal Year 2026, Brooklyn Community Board 17 submitted 10 top-ranked capital and expense priorities to the City. Top priority: "Other capital budget request for DEP" (Department of Environmental Protection).
